The Gettysburg Battlefield

Gettysburg is most well known for the Battle of Gettysburg which was turning point for Robert E. Lee and it actually goes all the way to Abraham Lincoln’s address. So, our first stop is here on the battlefield.

The battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War. The Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee’s second and most ambitious invasion of the North, often referred to as the, “high water mark,” of the rebellion. Gettysburg was the Civil War’s bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for Abraham Lincoln’s immortal, Gettysburg Address.

I’ve actually been here many times because my dad was a huge history buff and he would bring me here several times a year, especially on my birthday! History is not exactly my thing but for those who enjoy it, you and your family are free to walk around the battlefield. You will come across a variety of memorials, statues, cannons, and more. There are also guided tours available as well.

Staples of Gettysburg

Stop number two takes us to the oldest structure in Gettysburg, the Dobbin House, which was build in 1776! This is another place I visited when I was a kid and to be honest, not much has changed (which is a good thing!). The Dobbin House is a restaurant with typical dining upstairs and a candle lit dining experience in the Downstairs Tavern.

The menu incorporates a variety of favorites from steaks to seafood with many of their dishes incorporating crab! In addition to dining they also have a store where you can find a variety of gift shop items, and fresh baked goods such as pies and cheesecake.

Speaking of sweet treats, stop number three takes us to Mr. G’s Ice Cream! Every town has it’s iconic ice cream shop that has been around forever, and Gettysburg is no different. With a variety of traditional and experimental homemade flavors, Mr. G’s hits the spot on any warm day.

The Circle in Gettysburg

Our final stop of the day takes us to where all the hustle and bustle happen, the circle. Here there are people gathering all around, going in and out of shops and restaurants, and of course you have traffic moving through too. This area is really known for The Pub and Restaurant, The French Bakery and the Blue and Grey Grill, which is a very popular local establishment.

The Gettysburg Hotel also sits on the circle and is a landmark here in Gettysburg. The circle in Gettysburg is really a center of activity where you can also find live music most nights when it’s warm out and the weather is great. Gettysburg has a lot of different events that take place right here on the circle and there is always something for everyone!
